We headed home after our brief meeting with James, our spirits lower than before. Tabitha still hadn’t called or returned my text message. I was halfway tempted to stop by her hotel and see if she’d checked out and left town altogether. Instead, we went to the fish market right before closing and cleaned out their stock of tuna steaks.

“I swear, I’m about to trade this thing in for a pickup truck, so we can load your stinky cuisine in the back and leave my upholstery out of it,” I grumbled to the cat as we drove away from the market.

Selene stared longingly at the cardboard box on the floorboards in front of her seat. “Just make sure you get a step stool to cart along with you. Even with running boards I think you’d make a spectacle of yourself every time you tried to get in the driver’s seat.”

“You’re so hilarious, Selene. We should get you a gig at Merlin’s Well on stand-up night.”

She began humming “The Lollipop Guild,” her tail twitching in time with the chorus.

My jaw clenched. I was going to burn her tuna black.

While I was busy dreaming up ways to torment the furry feline, my phone rang in the cupholder. We were nearly home, so I reached over and picked it up.

“Someone’s gonna get a ticket!” Selene cheered.

“It’s Mom,” I told her, tapping the accept call button. “Hey, Mom. What’s up?”

“Cora, where are you?” Her voice trembled, the fear palpable in her tone.

A cold chill ran down my spine. “Mom? What’s wrong?”

“I need you to come over. It—it’s about Lavender.”

I gripped the steering wheel and tossed a wary glance at Selene. The cat’s amusement was gone, her ears now on alert as she listened to my side of the phone call.

“What happened?” I asked, my pulse thundering in my ears as I pulled into a driveway and turned my car around.

“I can’t explain it over the phone.” Mom’s voice rose another octave. “Just come quick.”

“I’m on my way.”

I hung up so I could focus on the road. Winterspell wasn’t a huge town, but there were several stop signs and red lights on the way from one side to the other. My mind raced, churning out half a dozen worst-case scenarios as I whipped across town, flying through intersections just as the lights switched from green to yellow.

“We’re not going to get there at all if you keep driving like this!” Selene shouted, her front paws on the dashboard as she tried to anchor herself.

“I know what I’m doing.” I stared through the windshield, my jaw tight, my voice firm.

“I don’t want to die in a fiery car crash,” Selene hissed.

“You’re invincible, remember?”

I pushed the pedal harder with my foot to make it through another yellow light.

“Mee—oewww!” Selene shrieked.

Despite Selene’s complaining, we made it to Mom’s house intact. Both Selene and I launched out of the car as soon as I cut the engine.

Selene yelled at me over one shoulder as she bounded ahead, up the front steps.
